Port of Spain, 18th February 2022: This year is a big year for Trinidad and Tobago as it will celebrate 60 years as an independent nation. To commemorate, the Film & Folklore Festival (FFF) launched its 4th annual edition with the theme 1962 Strength in Stories on Thursday 17th February 2022. This year’s theme will focus on showcasing Trinidad and Tobago’s different cultures and traditions from the last 60 years; from Independence to today. The FFF has once again partnered with Digicel Trinidad and Tobago to help bring this festival to life virtually through the Digicel platform: The PlayGo App, which will host national, regional and international films. There will also be workshops, an Opening show, a Comedy show and a Closing show which will all be taking place during the festival period, 24th - 26th June 2022. Submissions are now open to local filmmakers who would like to see their content featured in the festival. The content must fit this year’s theme or the essence of the festival (material that is culturally grounded in folklore, folktales or superstitious narratives in terms of themes, concepts, storylines and imagery) and be no more than ten minutes long. The FFF is all about the short films this year!
“Digicel is excited to build and expand our relationship with the Film Folklore Festival as we continue our support of the local creative industry. Last year, as part of the festival, we featured over 100 films on our PlayGo app, and the feedback was truly wonderful. This year, given the short film approach that the festival is taking, we are confident that viewers will have an even greater experience as they can consume more content via the app while on the go. There are lots of budding filmmakers with great potential just waiting for an opportunity to shine and Digicel is happy to be part of their journey,” said Colin Greaves, Head of Public Relations – Digicel.
The FFF and Digicel have also partnered to bring another exciting element to the festival, the My Carnival Lens challenge! My Carnival Lens is an initiative to showcase Carnival in 2022 (also the theme of the competition) from an audio-visual perspective. Citizens of Trinidad and Tobago are invited to create a film that captures their interpretation of the carnival celebrations for 2022. The film can focus on any cultural, traditional, personal, or historical scenario as it relates to how Carnival is celebrated in Trinidad and Tobago. The submitted two-minute short film can be animated or live-action – funny or serious. The shortlisted films will be featured on the Digicel PlayGo App, Digicel Facebook Page, and on the Film and Folklore social platforms. There are also some fantastic prizes to be won!
Deadline dates are as follows: My Carnival Lens Challenge - Monday 7th March 2022 Festival Submissions - Saturday 30th April 2022
